Our Mission

“To stock NC lakes with verified F1 bass, making them the best fisheries in the country.”
- Bass Anglers for NC Lakes, Inc.

“Enhanced genetic stocking programs have been used by fisheries managers throughout the United States for generations. They result in improved angler catch rates, maximize growth potential, supplement poor recruitment years, and reshape fish populations in positive ways that promote economic growth for local communities.

Overtime our understanding of black bass genetics has greatly improved to the point now where we can differentiate northern largemouth bass (micropterus salmoides), Florida largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides floridanus), generational crosses (F1, F2, etc), and back crosses (FLB x Bx or LMB x Bx). Enhanced genetic stocking programs have the ability to shift population genetics over time or directly add individuals to the adult population. To be successful at improving our fisheries we must utilize all our analysis tools to implement stocking programs that have the highest potential for success.

The keys to successful genetic enhancement stocking programs are fingerling density per acre, size selection, thermal survival, and annual repetition. Consistent annual stocking for five years at a rate of 10 to 12 fish per acre results in stocked fish accounting for up to 25% of the entire population. Continued stock will create measurable population level genetic integration at ten year and beyond.

Genetics are an core component of fisheries management. When supported by habitat restoration, selective angler harvest, and abundant forage the maximum genetic potential of any enhanced stocking program.”

“The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is excited about the opportunity to partner with Bass Anglers for North Carolina Lakes in a new F1 Hybrid Largemouth Bass stocking program. We are hopeful that this program will help the overall quality of Largemouth Bass in selected lakes throughout North Carolina. Since invasive Alabama Bass are now found throughout much of the state, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission is looking for opportunities to sustain and enhance our native bass fisheries. This program should provide opportunity for NCWRC biologists to learn and anglers to hopefully catch better quality fish.”
